making a splash with rs019 is a newcomer called mallard. discovered by bradley after being front and centre for almost every rs dance since 2016, the south london based producer and multi-instrumentalist makes a serious first impression with his debut ep ‘verte’.
currently studying jazz double-bass at trinity school of music, mallard’s productions demonstrate a keen ear for groove with a level of musicality rarely heard in electronic productions. at just 20 years old, he has already developed a unique sound palette and prodigious production style set to make him a name we will only hear more of in the years to come.
this ep, at once varied in tone and tempo is held together by a strong sonic identity and an overarching artistic vision: from the morphing polyrhythmic percussion of ‘surface’ to the shifting, heady pattern of ‘aquitaine’ via the psychedelic breaks of ‘untitled’ we are taken on quite the trip.

elliot adamson knows how good he is, which is equally as daunting as it is impressive. i’ve known him since he was the eager beaver barman at a place i’d play regularly in my hometown, who used to try and stick his demos under my nose, and now he seems poised for world domination with a who s who of the worlds biggest djs singing his praises. i’m so pleased i listened to those demos when i did. elliot has a startling breadth and depth of taste for someone of such tender years (although to be honest, people only mention other peoples youth when they feel like they’re getting old themselves). the ep elliot has provided for me me me covers a range of vibes which can be traced through mid 90s house, millennial techno and that current and contemporary feel that we’re all still struggling to name adequately. elliot is a real talent and i couldn’t be happier to provide a platform for what i feel is his most esoteric work to date, and a worthy showcase of his real capabilities.

mihalis safras makes his debut on hot creations with his raygun rave ep. hard-hitting basslines and rolling melodies feature throughout the ep plus a ‘paradiso’ remix from mathias kaden. with an addictive and melodic bass, title track raygun rave is a dancefloor awakener with influence from a bygone era. one stop to babel is up next with bouncing bass and mesmeric synthesis, mathias kaden has reinvented the track on the flip, incorporating robotic synths and wavy vocals. finally, sagit has a muted bassline, with a springy melody throughout and a hard-hitting kick that makes an appearance halfway. since 2006, the material series co-founder has been steadily rising within the house scene. hailing from the city of athens, safras has had an impressive array of releases on numerous labels including cajual, relief and material. his play it loud remix for marco carola last year received a huge response catapulting him to new levels of stardom. producing since 2001, kaden has demonstrated his versatile style and individual approach throughout his career. alongside his djing capabilities, the german producer demonstrated his impeccable freestyle efficiency playing part-live sets throughout his album tour. often called upon for his remix abilities, he has featured alongside artists such as mathias tanzmann, anja schneider and trentemölle

in 2015, midland watched gerd janson close panorama bar. the way he played that night and the energy he held in the room inspired him to go home and write some music influenced by the experience. the tracks that followed was the first release on regraded. fast forward three releases, in a taxi to an airport gerd mentioned he might have some demos for the label that he had been working on with shan. what followed was a pair of tracks that perfectly encapsulate what the label is about, soundtracking the moments of the night and day when everyone on the dance floor feels like a family.

nick mackrory & harry collier’s musical partnership dates all the way back to the 90’s, when they were both deeply invested in the musical boom in the uk that followed acid house, the rave scene, and the ibiza experience. nick went from drumsticks to turntables to studio wizardry, while harry honed in on his golden voice - which led him to a stint as a singer for faithless. they found their way back to each other in 2014 and have since developed a sound together that is fresh but not too polished. with touches of 60’s chanson coupled with sundazed electronics, their songs linger on like the feeling of a long day spent outdoors in summer.

frits wentink s bobby donny label returns with a new ep from icelandic producer felix leifur. it s not often someone other than the boss releases on this label so you know this new one is quality indeed. leifurwho also works as david & hjalti and davíð sveinn bjarnason has two solid eps to his name on dirt crew. they show him to be a producer of succulent deep house and atmospheric prone beats. across four cuts here he offers jazzy vibes, organic percussive patterns and authentic styles filled with warmth and soul. opener unidentified blues is a loose jumbled of hi hats and cymbals, rhodes chords and shuffling drums that could well come from the studio of a certain moodymann. they are alive and enriched with real feeling from start to finish. hampton is another tender fusion of deep kick drums, tape echo and curious melodies all tied together by jostling groove that is beautifully incidental and unhurried. contact then brings more proper jazz drums to the table, with distant sax sounds and closely miced hits and spaces of cymbal all feeling loose and free as they suck you into their world. last of all, universal rim picks up the pace with a more rooted house groove, freeform percussion and wooden hits and trilling, echo drenched melodies all making for an intoxicating cut

streator’s “mystic side dept.” grabs the needle first with a bumping garage cut ready for the floor. a2 “run like hell”, from philly’s maxine & cleo, is a hazy, stuttering acid tip. the philly head’s second appearance on the imprint alos sees him with some company, bringing friend from hometown kansas city along for the ride - tito fuego.

zone records welcome a real legend in the form of cardopusher for their next ep, a five track affair that is arresting from the off. venezuelan born cardopusher is now based in barcelona and co-founded the classicworks label. his diverse and experimental sound takes him from techno to electro to acid to rave to house, all with his own singular perspective. always fusing ideas with great skill on labels like super rhythm trax, zodiac 44 and bnr, he now comes correct for zone. kicking things off is the raw and raucous ‘nothing left to believe in.’ it is a macho tune with fractured vocals, wild synths and slap funk drums all sounding industrial and tortured. then comes blast cut, a more dynamic and stripped back electro groove with a corrugated bassline and metallic synth stabs all sounding informed by the past but looking to a distant future.

following his self titled lp, illa j sometimes known as “john regal” (born october 13.1986 in detroit, michigan) is a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, multi instrumentalist. he takes us on a trip to his hometown detroit with his third solo album home. his last lp successfully took illa j out of his brother and hiphop legend j dilla‘s shadow to show he is in his own lane. yet, yancey still felt as though he was in a box labeled rapper. teaming up with producer calvin valentine, who entirely produced the album, home is illa j‘s first album to properly showcase the full extent of his vocal range to put him in the singer-songwriter conversation. the listener can feel the soulfulness of this lp through illa j‘s singing and valentines‘ smooth production.

quantum collage is the latest pseudonym of olaf gutbrod aka ohm-g. having built a reputation around his long list of chill out tracks produced while resident in ibiza, this release on martin gretschmann (acid pauli, console) and nico stojan’s ouïe sees him dive into some more electronic textures. ‘lucid dreaming’ is a chugging, groovy trip built around a shuffling beat and dubbed out percussion and horns, tapping into gutbrod’s talent for amplifying the vibe. ‘afrika im weltraum’ adds a little more tempo - a swirling, driving drum loop provides the basis for layers of extra percussion and spacey synths and various chants and radio broadcasts. her beauty certainly draws on some the mastery gutbrod showed in his releases on café del mar and hotel costes cds - a chilled out groover with the sunset / sunrise seemingly in mind.

young bordeaux-based producer leon revol found support from the likes of move d with his 2016 debut ep for monologues records clear definition . following releases on secret reels and future disco, he returns with another stunning collection of tracks that are considerably beyond his years. pink coffee and sun is the place see him work pleasingly warm synth lines over organic percussion, embers channels more sunshine with its summery guitar licks and birds shows his depth wth a non-dancefloor workout reminiscent of floating points.

adding to previous 12“es on ostgut ton and his own rk label fellow neuköllner and berghain resident kobosil offers four new uncompromising techno club tools.
while all cuts on the 105 release share filthy, stone-cold, elemental rhythms – pounding, energetic and hypnotic 4/4 kick drum slaps – the devil is, like with all kobosil productions, in the aesthetic details. “40000 l” uses gargling synth patterns and howling horns to dramatic effect, “bei nacht h (178)” contrasts the kick with a harsh, tinny drumbeat and menacing melody pad, creating a nightmarish vibe.
“backmask n” on b1 offers heavily alienated vocal samples alongside rave-reminiscing synth stabs and staggered hi-hat percussion. “derange” closes this four-tracker with grainy drone echoes and throbbing, sizzling synth pulses.

nyako is our 7th vinyl release here at otc and it s a big one. south african producer behr created nyako together with makadem during a santuri safari session at sondeka festival in kenya. the e.p is 4 cuts that build in brilliance from the original which has extremely broad appeal. indian producer daisho delivers a straight ahead 4 x 4 house groover, south-london production duo modified man swing their analogue machines into action for a heady synth adventure, which is just a bit broken. berlin-based duo of dirk leyers and dj nomad (hans reuschl) are the ideal pairing to merge technology and tradition together as africaine808 bring up the rear with a balearic sensation to round off the ep. makadem is a talented musician and vibrant performing artist from kenya. he s a figurehead of the benga scene in nairobi. his stage presence and powerful vocal delivery, had him likened to the legendary fela kuti. makadem innovates by bringing traditional african instrumentation, story telling and contemporary production methods together.

ralphi rosario is a pioneer of house music, kicking off an influential dj career in chicago when he was still in high school. the remixes and productions that followed have garnered him #1 billboard dance chart hits as well as more than 20 well-respected years spinning records. he’s an artist who represents the ethos of glitterbox recordings, with decades of quality house music history woven into every beat. also in line with the spirit of the label, ‘wanna give it up’ is a classic track given some very tasteful modern updates, from dr packer and jamie 3:26. the familiar ‘légo’s dub’ from the original release is present and correct, alongside a suitably funked-up version from disco edits maestro dr packer. finally, fellow chicagoan jamie 3:26 amps the party up a further notch with some irresistible clinking percussion and a lazy-cool groove.

„umwelt’s 12inch “… city” from 1999 was one of the most impressive 12inches i had at that time and i played the shit out of it. it was dark and very emotional, it was abstract but also driving at the same time. this was 1999 though, before discogs and before facebook and all the other platforms people have now to do research on artists they like and follow their work. at that time it was the record shop – and that was it. nobody knew this guy though, and i didn’t get my hands on any of the following releases, so in my world there was no follow-up to this record ever and i thought it would remain a one-off gem in my record box. until by some coincident i recently discovered he was still around and had actually released numerous releases in the meantime. i was very excited and contacted him straight away and ended up booking him for krake festival in the same year. undoubtedly his set was one of the best of the whole festival! he took the roof off the place with his mix of raw electro, industrial and rave and everybody was talking about it afterwards, saying it was the highlight of the festival! talking to him i learnt, that most of the tracks he played were his own, mostly unreleased. he produces without computers, all his tracks are single takes, there is no editing, no mixing afterwards, he only has a stereo track recording which is what it is. he owns a cutting machine which he uses to cut dubplates from his tracks, which he then plays out during his sets. this whole information about this very unique artistic approach just killed it for me, and since working with him was so nice as well, i asked him for a demo for killekill and its labels and was hoping for tracks i could make a great 12&#8243,, of. i got 14 tracks and after weeks of trying to pick the best, i finally realized i held one of the best electro albums ever in my hand – banging beats and the balls to go big and epic, subtle melodies, drama, funk – this album has got it all, and what’s most important, the music on it is the exact opposite of so much other music nowadays: it is emotional, it tells a story, it is easily recognizable and it is not interchangeable. it’s just umwelt.“ nico deuster

arvid whetman has plenty going for him at the moment. as sexazoid he s dropping all kinds of off-kilter machine beats on excellent labels like born free, while as your planet is next he builds on appearances on junk yard connections, waving hands, opal tapes, studio barnhus and klasse to deliver this chirpy four-tracker to acid waxa. from the twee vocals to the playful synths and straight up drums, this is club music crafted for an immediate hit. whetman makes this approach work magnificently though, liberally applying his musical personality to lo-fi deep house and roughshod acid, with heartbreaker being a firm favourite thanks to its fulsome 303 bassline and hooky vocal mantras.

cementing his reputation as the star toaster with the small but popular el paso sound system, based in the waltham park area, dennis alcapone was one of the first deejays to rise to prominence following u roy’s breakthrough in the late 1960s. born dennis smith in the rural district of culloden, he became immersed in sound system culture after settling in western kingston. once el paso became big on the sound system circuit, dental technician-turned-producer keith hudson brought him into the studio for his debut recordings, which led to a debut album for studio one and hit material for duke reid, some cut in concert with his deejay sparring partner, lizzy. alcapones longstanding links with bunny lee yielded the excellent guns don’t argue album, first issued in 1972, on which the toaster raps with style over some of lees all-time greatest rhythms, including delroy wilsons better must come, john holts left with a broken heart and slim smiths rendition of the temptations soul classic ain’t too proud to beg.

one of jamaicas most highly-rated vocalists, alton ellis made an incredible contribution to the islands popular music. blessed with a particularly emotive voice that brings shivers to the spine whether singing original material or cover tunes, ellis was born and raised in trench town, the west kingston ghetto area that gave rise to bob marley and the wailers and countless other singers. ellis and singing partner eddie parkins hit big in 1961 with the ballad muriel for coxsone dodd, and after parkins moved to the usa, ellis teamed briefly with john holt, and then began fronting the flames harmony group. he excelled in the rock steady style, christening the genre with rock steady and i have got a date, bouncing between studio one and treasure isle for a number of years. from 1971, he spent increasing period in london, but continued to record hits in jamaica for various producers. the 1979 release love to share was arranged by the great studio one keyboardist, jackie mittoo, who co-produced the album with junior lincoln, founder of the london-based bamboo label, the disc straddles the line between lover’s rock and roots reggae, remaining a lesser-known classic

finally the third release for red rooster records. like the second one, we are talking about a various artists e.p.: minimono (fabio della torre and ennio colacci) is an italian duo born in florence in 1997. in 2008 fabio and ennio founded their own label -bosconi records- where they released their first album in 2010. now minimono works with robsoul records, vibraphone and other very good label from all over the world. dj rou is parts of the project called homequest, a real crew of artists made in bologna, we can also find his music on robsoul jazz, bosconi extra virgin or flexi cuts. memoryman aka uovo is one of the famous pastaboys, he has a long story that starts with the label manocalda, he worked with a lot of big artists from the main house scene and he did a lot of records with the bests labels. d’arabia, class 1991, is the owner of red rooster records and this is the third release for him, surely not the last.

italian artist paul santangelo has been having fun messing with the sometimes po-faced traditions of the house music scene through a raft of home made productions on soundcloud, but now with his venetian causeway label hes able to prove the clout to be found in his music. on this 10inch the arch title generic house traxx actually does a disservice to the quality of the music contained within santangelo does a fine job of whipping up monosynth bass and ethereal pads astride an uptempo beat that, while familiar, has an atmosphere with considerable depth to it. please him on the b side goes further out on a mellow electro tip, plaintive leads and aqueous chords flirting with 808-style beats.
